Privacy Policy — HURL
Last updated: 9 June 2026
HURL ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information the HURL mobile app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. HURL is built to be privacy-friendly: there is no traditional account, and we do not ask for your name, email address, or phone number.
No Account, No Sign-Up
You can play HURL without creating an account. When you first open the app, we generate an anonymous identifier that is stored on your device and used to save your profile and records. We do not collect your email address or a password, and we use anonymous authentication so your activity is not tied to a personal identity.
Information We Collect
Profile information: To take part in the leaderboard and track your progress, we store:
- A display name you choose (up to 16 characters)
- An optional city, shown next to your name on the leaderboard
- Your unit preference (km/h or mph)
- Your personal best velocity and total XP
- Streak information and challenge progress
Throw history: Each throw you record is saved with its velocity, a timestamp, and whether it was a personal best. This builds your history within the app and powers leaderboards and challenges.
Friends: If you add friends, we store their anonymous identifiers so you can compare results on the friends leaderboard.
Motion sensor data: HURL uses your device's accelerometer to measure how fast you throw your phone. This motion data is processed on your device in real time to calculate your velocity. The raw sensor readings are not uploaded or stored — only the resulting velocity is saved.
Device and app information: We collect basic technical information such as your device model, operating system version, and the app version. This helps us run the app correctly (for example, distinguishing a real device from a simulator) and support you if something goes wrong.
Usage and analytics: We use analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve it. These events are generic — for example, opening the app, recording a throw, achieving a personal best, or watching a rewarded ad — and do not include personal contact information.
Permissions
HURL may request the following, all of which are optional:
- Motion & fitness / accelerometer: required to measure your throw.
- Notifications: if you allow them, we send reminders about your streak, daily challenges, and leaderboard activity. You can turn these off at any time in your device settings.
- App Tracking Transparency (iOS): only relevant if you choose to watch rewarded ads. You can decline tracking and still use the app and watch ads.
HURL does not request access to your location (GPS), camera, photos, contacts, or microphone. Any city shown is the one you type in yourself.
Notifications
If you opt in to notifications, we store a messaging token so we can deliver reminders such as a streak about to expire, a new daily challenge, or a friend beating your record. You can revoke notification permission at any time in your device settings.
Advertising
HURL includes optional rewarded ads provided by Google AdMob. These are never forced — you only see an ad when you choose to watch one in exchange for a reward (such as an XP boost or streak protection). On iOS, ads are non-personalised unless you grant tracking permission. You can decline tracking and still watch rewarded ads.
Purchases
HURL offers an optional one-time "Supporter Pack" purchase that unlocks a cosmetic badge. Payments are handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play — we never see or store your payment card details. We record only whether the purchase is active so we can show your supporter badge.
How We Use Your Information
- Save your profile, records, streaks, and challenge progress
- Rank players on global, city, and friends leaderboards
- Deliver notifications you have opted in to
- Show optional rewarded ads and apply their rewards
- Maintain and improve the app's performance and reliability
Data Storage and Sharing
Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase (Firestore, Authentication, Cloud Messaging) and transmitted over encrypted connections. We use Google AdMob for optional ads. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy and security commitments. We do not sell, trade, or rent your information. Information you choose to make public — such as your display name, city, and velocity — is visible to other players on the leaderboard.
Your Rights and Choices
- Deletion: Open Settings → Delete Account in the app to permanently delete your profile and all of your throw history, friends, and records.
- Notifications & tracking: Turn these off at any time in your device settings.
- Access & questions: Contact us using the details below to ask about the data associated with your profile.
Children's Privacy
Because throwing a handheld device carries inherent risk, HURL is intended for players aged 18 and over and includes an in-app safety acknowledgement before each throw. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we will delete the associated data.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
